Enrollment Timeline

We start enrollment for the next school year every January. Please pass this information along to any family you know of that might enroll a student next year. Beginning in January, we'll have parent visitation events for prospective kindergarten families at all of our elementary schools. Then, February is our first enrollment period, which is the month to enroll a prospective kindergartener to have the best chance of her/him assigned to their first-closest school. Incoming kindergarteners with older siblings in our system should be registered by February 28 as well. Here are links to our enrollment website and our enrollment timeline, which includes the kindergarten visitation dates. Don't hesitate to email if you have a question that is not addressed by either of those resources.

Kindergarten Entry Age

Children must turn five on or before September 1 of the year they enter kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten, or "TK", is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Pursuant to law, (EC 48000[c]), as of 2014, a child is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2 and December 2.

Transitional Kindergarten is part of the public school system and is free to participating students. Registration in the TK program is optional. TK is not offered at all school sites, so students who enroll in TK often go to a site other than their assigned school. Many students then change schools and return to their school of assignment for Kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten is taught by a credentialed teacher and is intended to give young learners a head start and provide them with an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is tailored to meet their academic and social needs. The teacher will help children develop social and communication skills through activities that build confidence while supporting the traditional kindergarten curriculum of math, literacy, and language development taught in interactive ways.

TK Enrollment Process

The enrollment process for the TK Program is the same process as traditional kindergarten. Parents should enroll their child at the District Office, located at 2960 Hallmark Drive, Belmont. For more information, please see our Enrollment and School Assignment page.

Please contact the BRSSD Office of Enrollment (see above) for more information or see the Transitional Kindergarten page on the BRSSD website.
