First Thing's First!

First grade is a big year for learning and growing. First graders make big gains in reading and independence.

Students will:

  • Read grade level sight words

  • Independently choose “just right” reading material

  • Locate the main idea and details in stories

  • Retell a sequence of events in oral and written stories

  • Print words legibly

  • Learn proper capitalization and punctuation

  • Explore narrative, informational and opinion writing genres

  • Count to 120 by ones, twos, fives and tens starting at any number

  • Understand basic place value of ones, tens and hundreds

  • Add and subtract numbers up to 20

  • Understand properties of two and three dimensional geometric shapes

  • Tell and write time to the hour and half hour

  • Use simple maps and globes

  • Learn about their community

  • Learn about Earth, Physical and Life Sciences
