WELCOME TO SANDPIPER SCIENCE!
This year brings a lot of exciting changes - new curriculum, new science standards, and soon a brand new classroom!
This year in science we will be studying three units. We are starting off the year with Life Science. We will study our own human systems, like how the human body is like a machine, learn about how our vision works, and the nervous system. To end the unit the students will study the environment. We look at how energy moves through the natural system and how humans are impacting our planet. We will also learn about the food web, and do an owl pellet dissection.
In the middle of the year students will learn about energy. I will encourage students to think about the energy that things need to move. Students will explore how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. Students will realize that thinking about the world in terms of energy helps them make sense of how and why things speed up and slow down.
Finally, we end the year with Earth science. This unit takes the perspective that every rock has a story. Students will develop an appreciation for the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. Through hands-on investigation, students explore the world of rocks and design ways of protecting humans from their dangers.
